I was recently invited to attend Queen’s University Belfast to act as judge for an end-of-year project for the MSc Construction and Project Management course. The aim of the event was to allow students to present at a mock tender interview for the redevelopment of a sports centre building. The students had been divided into groups weeks prior and asked to analyse tender documents, develop a construction methodology along with a programme, then present their plan. Fourteen groups presented throughout the day using a range of presentation skills and media ranging from PowerPoint slides to videography.
I am delighted I attended the event. The key learning I took from the day is the importance that construction industry professionals engage with academia to help deliver such courses and events. In my opinion, having guest Lecturers, who are working in industry, present and speak with the students, is a fantastic way for both the Lectures as well as the students to learn about new industry best practices. Well done to Tara Brooks for leading the module. Tara has reached out to various people in the construction industry to help best prepare the next generation of managers and leaders.
